Waffles, #A1046358 is a 5 yo female Lab mix who weighs 39 pounds and has been at the Shelter since 5/23. She is at the Contra Costa County Animal Shelter in Martinez, California. Dessy George has provided this recent evaluation: Waffles cannot be any cuter!!! She is a medium sized, slender lab mixed girl with a playful, slightly naughty personality. She could not wait to get out of the kennel and was joyful and interactive during our entire time together. Waffles is easy to leash and walk out of the kennel. She likes to sniff and run around, and appears to be potty trained. She is already fixed and ready to go home with you. Waffles knows sit, high five and semi lie down. She is highly treat motivated and trainable. She has an adorable, smily face with one straight, one floppy ear, and a nicely sand-colored coat. Waffles has made great progress in playgroups, but can sometimes be observed to bark at dogs across barriers or in the distance. She could live with another dog with slow, proper introductions. She is very affectionate and affiliative and would make a great family pet, especially if the household is pretty active. Beautiful Waffles is up for general adoption and euthanasia listed for 8/5. Head out to CCAS today and ask to meet her and save her life by fostering or adopting her. Per her initial behavior assessment. Waffles appeared somewhat nervous/tense and somewhat affiliative/soft in the kennel on first approach - remained near the front with a slow/low tail wag, tense body a face, averting her gaze away from handlers. She exhibited an acute retreat towards the back of the kennel as the leash was brought into view (cowering towards the back of the kennel and did not come forward). The trainer crouched near the threshold of the kennel door, cracking open the kennel door, at which time Waffles began moving forward to exit the kennel and allowed leashing. She remained distant and avoidant in the yard, beginning to pace and pant around the space, often glancing upwards towards the yard fencing. Did not approach handlers freely or when recalled and did not eat treats. When brought inside, her pacing and panting responses increased, though she began approaching handlers more frequently and tolerated some handling/petting. Began climbing/standing against the trainer's lap, but would generally not reengage when pet (appeared to be a stress-based response, not affection-seeking). Waffles ate a small amount of wet dog food offered by the staff handler. Would frequently stand against countertops, as well as the dog/baby pen in the office. Appeared stressed and anxious throughout the evaluation with varying degrees of social responses. Was able to disengage from stress-based responses to play with the staff handler (appeared interested in toys), but would revert back to standing against countertops, pacing, panting. Slightly hesitant returning to the kennel, but walked inside as the trainer stepped partially in with her. Brief growling towards one of the neighboring dogs in passing (who was staring, stiff) but remained largely neutral around others. Staff and volunteers said this about Waffles: Waffles is a sweet, affectionate dog who loves spending time with people and is happy to soak up attention and pets. She has come a long way during her time at the shelter and enjoys making new friends. She is full of personality and loves rolling in the grass. Waffles is looking for an active home that can provide plenty of enrichment, exercise, and opportunities to keep her busy. She would do best as the only four legged friend in the home, where she can be the center of attention and enjoy all the love her family has to offer.
